China houdt al meer dan 4,65 miljoen computers in ongeveer 80.000 internetcafés in de gaten om het spelen van gewelddadige of seksueel getinte games op internet onmogelijk te maken. Dat meldden Chinese staatsmedia vrijdag. Het Chinese ministerie van Cultuur heeft 219 internetspellen op een lijst van verboden games gezet, omdat ze ”obsceen, pornografisch of gewelddadig” zouden zijn.
De overheid verhinderde dit jaar zeker 87 miljoen keer dat Chinezen konden inloggen bij deze spellen. Van de zeker 338 miljoen internetgebruikers in China zou meer dan 64 procent online games spelen.
Op 1 juli dit jaar trad de Groene Dam (Green Dam Youth Escort) in werking, een controversieel softwarepakket, waarmee de Chinese overheid volgens critici haar greep op het internet wil versterken. De autoriteiten zeggen dat Groene de Dam bedoeld is om de Chinese jeugd te beschermen tegen pornografisch materiaal en andere ‘ongezonde’ informatie op het internet.

After comprehensive testing and pilot use, the software has been shown to effectively filter harmful content in text and graphics on the Internet and has already satisfied the conditions for pre-installation by computer manufacturers.
